Colloidal Antimony
Pentoxide
Flame Retardant Additives
General Product Information
Nyacol Nano Technologies,
Inc. offers colloidal antimony pentoxide in various forms for use as
synergists with halogenated flame retardants.
Advantages
s Better penetration of
the substrate.
s Greater cost effectiveness
and improved color matching in mass tone colors.
s Less pigmenting or whitening effect for
deep mass tone colors.
s Translucency for applications such as
coatings, films, and laminates.
s Easier handling and processing;
liquid dispersions will not clog spray guns.
s Suspension stability in low viscosity
systems.
s High flame retardant efficiency for
minimal added weight or change in hand.
s Maintenance of physical properties in
thin films and fine denier fibers.

BurnExÔ Colloidal
Antimony Pentoxide Powder
BurnEx Powders:
Aqueous dispersions of colloidal antimony pentoxide are spray-dried to
make antimony pentoxide powders.
These powders will not tint the product because they are 10 to
40 micron agglomerates of nano-sized particles. In situations where our
available resin carriers are not compatible with your system, our
regular powders are preferred.

BurnEx™ Nano-Dispersible Powders:
These powders of colloidal antimony pentoxide readily disperse to nanometer-sized
particles in various solvents and polymers. Nyacol currently offers
three nano-dispersible powders.
BurnEx™ A1582 disperses in water and has found use in vinyl
and some thermoplastic polyesters.
BurnEx™ ADP480 is compatible with and disperses in non-polar
hydrocarbons such as hexane and toluene, and in thermoplastics such as
polypropylene.
BurnEx™ ADP494 disperses in polar compounds such as acetone,
acetonitrile, and MEK. It is used for solvent-extended epoxy, solution
spun fibers and thermoplastics such as ABS.

Polymer Concentrates:
BurnEx™ 2000
BurnEx 2000 polypropylene flame retardant concentrates are
made from nano-dispersible antimony pentoxide and an organic
bromine compound.
Polypropylene resins of different Melt Flow Index (MFI) are used
for different applications.
Nyacol can design other concentrates or work with your
compounder to formulate a custom product for you. We have a fully
equipped compounding laboratory at our Ashland, Massachusetts
facility.

Usage Levels:
The usage level of the various grades depends on the material being
treated, the test procedure, the ratio of halogen to antimony
oxide, and other ingredients being used. It is not possible to predict flame retardance
performance; therefore, experimental evaluation is required. In textile, paper, and plastics
applications, typical use levels of antimony pentoxide are 1.5 to 8%,
with a halogen use level range of 5 to 20%. Typical ratios of
halogen to antimony are 5:1 to 2:1.
