Textiles

Nyacol offers NYACOL® colloidal antimony pentoxide as a fine particle dispersion for use as a flame retardant synergist with halogenated flame retardants.  The dispersions offer the advantages noted below compared to conventional antimony trioxide systems.  NYACOL®  colloidal antimony pentoxide is offered as water dispersions, organic dispersions, powders and polymer concentrates.  The choice of product will depend on the application and desired properties.  Please refer to the Product Information bulletins or contact our Technical Specialists.

Plastics

Nyacol offers NYACOL® colloidal antimony pentoxide as powders, organic dispersions, and polymer concentrates for use as a flame retardant synergist with halogenated compounds in flame retardant plastics.  The ultrafine particle size allows the formulator to achieve several advantages compared to the micron-sized antimony trioxide.  Translucent flame retardant articles can be produced using colloidal antimony pentoxide powders, organic dispersions or polymer concentrates.  Colorant loadings can be reduced one-third to one-half the normal amount used with the pigment-sized antimony trioxide, resulting in lower formulation costs and improved physical properties.  Color matching is made easier as a result of working with a low tint base polymer.  Physical properties such as impact strength are dramatically improved by use of the 0.03 micron antimony pentoxide compared to micron-sized particles.   The balance of properties of the plastic is improved, allowing greater flexibility for the formulator.  The ultrafine particle size also allows the production of flame retardant thin films and flame retardant fine denier fibers and monofilament.  The small particle size also does not deluster the fibers, allowing production of flame retardant bright fibers. 

NYACOL® antimony pentoxide products find use in PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene and ABS plastics. 

Nyacol also offers NYACOL® colloidal zinc oxide as a UV absorber and acid scavenger on a developmental basis for polymer applications.  The colloidal zinc oxide is optically transparent but UV absorbing and is useful in films, fibers and injection molded articles.

Electronics

Nyacol offers NYACOL® antimony pentoxide powders for use as a synergist with halogenated flame retardants in high performance epoxy.  Antimony pentoxide has strong sorption properties for metallic impurities resulting in improved long term performance of the epoxy in electronic applications.  Antimony pentoxide is also less soluble than antimony trioxide and will not interfere with electroless plating baths.  The powders are also non-pigmenting for light transmission and allow formulation of deep colors and the use of reduced color loadings where applicable.

Films

Nyacol offers nano-sized NYACOL® colloidal silica dispersed in ethylene glycol for use in PET films and fibers.  A range of particle sizes from 20 nanometers to 100 nanometers is available.  These specialized products are manufactured in polymer grade ethylene glycol and provide transparent antiblock properties in the films and improved abrasion resistance. 

Oil Refining

Nyacol provides NYACOL® water-based metal passivation additives based on antimony pentoxide or tin oxide.  Antimony-based additives scavenge nickel from the FCC catalyst, improving gasoline yields and reducing catalyst attrition.  Tin oxide-based additives scavenge vanadium and extend the useful life of the catalyst in FCC unit operations. NYACOL® metal passivation additives are easily introduced into the FCC unit feed stream and can be diluted to required concentrations easily.  They are extremely stable and only a small metering pump is required to control dosage in the FCC unit. 

Coatings

NYACOL® colloidal alumina finds use as a high temperature coating and binder.

NYACOL® colloidal tin oxide can be used as an anti-scuff coating on glass. 

NYACOL® colloidal zinc oxide is available on a developmental basis and can be used to formulate optically transparent UV absorbing coatings on glass and other substrates.

Ceramics

Nyacol offers a number of colloidal dispersions or sols for use in ceramic applications.  All the products are available as highly stable dispersions for ease of use and handling.

NYACOL® colloidal cerium oxide has demonstrated its effectiveness as a zirconium stabilizer in ceramic applications.

NYACOL® colloidal tin oxide is designed for use as a binder in ceramic or catalyst applications.

NYACOL® colloidal yttria is designed for use as a sintering aid for silicon nitride and other ceramics, as a stabilizer for zirconia ceramics, for producing a transformation toughened alumina ceramic, as a high temperature binder for ceramics and fibers and as a core wash for titanium investment casting. 

NYACOL® colloidal zirconia sols are available in a range of sizes for use as a binder in investment casting of reactive metals and superalloys.  The products can be used with or without yttria depending on the application needs.
